New Delhi: In a special gesture of honour, a formation of F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets of the United Arab Emirates Air Force escorted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aircraft on Friday after it entered the airspace of the United Arab Emirates.
During his meeting with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, PM Modi described the aerial escort as a matter of pride for the people of India.
He said, “The way your air force escorted my aircraft today is an honour for the people of India. We have been speaking over the phone for a long time, but I was eager to meet you personally. I am very happy to see you today.”
According to UAE’s state news agency Emirates News Agency, military aircraft welcomed PM Modi’s plane soon after it entered UAE airspace.
The report stated that the squadron leader sought permission to escort the aircraft to the airport as a ceremonial welcome gesture.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed personally received PM Modi upon arrival at Abu Dhabi International Airport, highlighting the close diplomatic and strategic ties between India and the UAE.
PM Modi later posted on social media thanking the UAE President for the “special honour” extended to him during his arrival in Abu Dhabi.
The Prime Minister is on a brief visit to the UAE as part of the first leg of his five-nation tour, which also includes four European countries.
