Woman seriously injured after vehicle incident sparks tension in Tapa Mandi after civic poll results

Chandigarh: Tension gripped Tapa Mandi following the declaration of municipal council election results after a woman was seriously injured in an incident involving supporters of rival candidates in Ward No. 8.

The controversy erupted after allegations were levelled against supporters of Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Gurmeet Singh, who won the ward, by supporters of defeated Independent candidate Nazam Hussain Rajoo Khan. The injured woman has been identified as Rani, wife of Rajoo Khan.

According to the allegations, a Scorpio vehicle carrying supporters of the winning candidate was driven into the locality near the residence of the defeated candidate, where it allegedly struck and dragged the woman for some distance. She sustained serious injuries and was shifted from Tapa Mandi to a hospital in Barnala after receiving initial medical treatment.

Local residents claimed that the incident occurred after supporters of the winning candidate entered the area, leading to a confrontation. They alleged that the situation could have resulted in further injuries, including to children present in the locality. Following the incident, angry residents reportedly damaged the Scorpio vehicle.

Independent candidate Nazam Hussain Rajoo Khan demanded strict legal action against Gurmeet Singh Road and his supporters, alleging that the attack on his wife was deliberate and life-threatening. He further claimed that iron rods and firecrackers were recovered from the vehicle involved in the incident.

Police officials reached the spot soon after receiving information and have launched an investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile, Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Gurmeet Singh Road has rejected all allegations, describing them as false and baseless. Police said the facts would be established after a thorough investigation.
