Strict Timeline for Flood Protection Works; No Leniency for Delays: Dr Himanshu Aggarwal

Patiala News (April 22): Deputy Commissioner Patiala, Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal, conducted a detailed review of flood protection works and monsoon preparedness across the district, directing all concerned departments to ensure timely completion of ongoing projects.

While chairing the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner emphasised the need for a thorough understanding of past instances of waterlogging and breaches in the Ghaggar river and other drains, along with identifying practical and long-term solutions. Setting this as the priority work for next few months he warned that any delay in completing flood protection works within the stipulated timeframe would invite strict action against the concerned officers.

Dr. Aggarwal directed the Drainage Department to complete all ongoing flood protection works by the end of June. While reviewing urban flooding points he also instructed officials of the Municipal Corporation to ensure desilting of sewer lines, including the Jacob and Model Town drains in the city, well before the onset of the monsoon season.

Reviewing the cleaning works of Badi Nadi and Chhoti Nadi drains, the Deputy Commissioner sought detailed reports on flood and waterlogging situations witnessed in the years 2019, 2023, and 2025, particularly in low-lying areas. He stated that he would personally inspect the ongoing works and that no negligence would be tolerated.

The Deputy Commissioner also reviewed ongoing flood protection measures at key locations, including desilting works in the Ghaggar at Sarala Head, boulder stone protection work at village Maarhu, and desilting of Hansi-Butana canal syphons being carried out by the Haryana Irrigation Department.

Directing all departments to strictly adhere to timelines, Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal asked them to submit detailed action plans without delay. He further instructed departments such as PSPCL and Food Supply to provide data on low-lying power stations, godowns, and other critical infrastructure to ensure their protection during floods.

Additionally, he sought information regarding villages that were cut off during previous floods, areas where livestock was left stranded, and directed officials to prepare a comprehensive communication plan along with an inventory of safety equipment.

Among others, Additional Deputy Commissioners Damanjit Singh Mann and Navreet Kaur Sekhon, SDMs Naman Markan, Richa Goyal, APS Somal, and Harjot Kaur Mavi, DRO Harsimran Singh, Executive Engineer Drainage Akash Aggarwal, and other officials were present at the meeting.
