Chandigarh: An improvised explosive device (IED) was recovered near the Sector 43 bus stand in Chandigarh on Sunday, following which police launched a security operation in the area.
According to preliminary information, Chandigarh Police seized the suspected IED and cordoned off the area around the bus stand. Senior police officers and multiple teams were deployed, while the surrounding area was searched thoroughly.
Police had reportedly increased security across the city earlier in the afternoon based on intelligence inputs. The suspected IED was later recovered from an area behind the bus stand.
Officials said the device had not been activated when it was found. Police are investigating whether it was placed as part of a plan to carry out a major attack.
Teams are now examining CCTV footage from the surrounding areas to identify anyone who may have left the device there. The investigation is ongoing.
