New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with his Nepalese counterpart Balen Shah over the phone and expressed grief over the loss of lives caused by the sudden floods in Nepal.
During the conversation, Modi offered Nepal all possible humanitarian and relief assistance from India.
Initial reports suggest that around 105 Indian tourists are missing following the flash floods. According to BBC Nepal, 19 bridges and around 40 kilometres of roads have been washed away. The exact number of casualties is not yet known.
The floods have caused extensive damage to infrastructure, with at least 13 hydropower projects and several homes reportedly damaged or destroyed.
Border checkpoints along the China border have also been closed. According to BBC Nepal, both India and China have offered assistance to Nepal.
Meanwhile, Nepal has appealed to local and international NGOs to assist with rescue and rehabilitation efforts.
Flood alert issued in UP and Bihar
Following the flooding in Nepal, authorities in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have issued alerts as several major rivers originating in Nepal flow into Bihar, including the Gandak, Narayani and Kosi rivers.
