Punjab minister Harpal Cheema accuses BJP, Congress of double standards after FIR in Chandigarh

Chandigarh: Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has made sharp allegations against the BJP and Congress following the FIR lodged against him and AAP’s Aman Arora in Chandigarh.

Speaking in Chandigarh, Cheema said former Congress Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had promised to eradicate drugs from Punjab but failed to deliver, leading people to vote the Aam Aadmi Party into power.

He alleged that during the tenure of the BJP and Akali Dal government, drugs were sold under the name of former Akali minister Bikram Singh Majithia.

Cheema said even Congress leaders, including former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Navjot Singh Sidhu, had called Majithia a smuggler in the Assembly, while Partap Singh Bajwa had vowed to bring Majithia “with a rope around his neck” if the Congress came to power.

“But ever since action was taken against Majithia, these leaders have changed their stance and are now expressing sympathy for him,” Cheema said, accusing them of making statements in Majithia’s favour despite their earlier demands for strict action.

Cheema added that when the AAP government arrested Majithia with evidence, the Congress tried to create issues around it but failed.

“When nothing worked in the Majithia case, a false complaint was filed against us with the Chandigarh Police, which registered an FIR within 24 hours without investigation,” he said, alleging that the Chandigarh Police, functioning under the BJP-led Ministry of Home Affairs, acted in haste under political pressure.
