Boat carrying 32 Indian tourists capsizes off Vietnam, 15 feared dead

New Delhi: A tourist boat carrying 32 Indian tourists capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam on Saturday, with local media reporting that 15 people are feared dead. However, the Indian Embassy has not yet officially confirmed the number of casualties.

In a post on X, the Embassy of India in Hanoi described the incident as a tragic accident and said it was in constant touch with Vietnamese authorities as search and rescue operations continued.

The embassy said local authorities were working to establish the exact details of the incident. Emergency control rooms have been set up at the Indian Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City to assist affected families and provide information.

According to Vietnamese authorities, the boat was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members at the time of the accident.

Local newspaper VnExpress reported that the speedboat overturned around 400 metres from the shore while travelling from Hon May Rut Island to An Thoi Port.

The Indian mission said the emergency helplines would remain operational to provide assistance and updates as rescue efforts continue. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
