Chandigarh: Tension prevailed in Nawanshahr after a video of some youths from the migrant community making objectionable remarks against Punjab and Punjabi society went viral on social media. The incident took place in Prem Nagar on September 2, police said.
Following the video’s circulation, Sikh activists and local residents staged a protest, demanding strict action against the accused. Heavy police force was deployed to prevent any untoward incident. The protesters blocked the road for two hours, alleging that police delayed action, which led to rising tensions in the area.
A case has been registered against Prem Nagar sarpanch Mohan Gupta, his son Surjeet Kumar, along with Shiv Kumar, Anubhav, Anshu, Anuj and two others.
Superintendent of Police Sarabjit Singh assured that legal action is being taken and said no one will be allowed to disturb peace in the district. Protesters, however, warned that their agitation would intensify if the accused are not arrested immediately.
