Chandigarh: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has formally taken over the security of the Bhakra Dam project in Nangal, Punjab.
A function was held in Nangal Township today to mark the induction of CISF personnel into the project. The Union Home Ministry had in May approved the deployment of 296 armed security personnel of the central force for the dam’s protection.
Built on the river Sutlej, the Bhakra Dam is the second-highest in Asia at 225.55 metres, after the Tehri Dam in Uttarakhand which stands at 261 metres. It is also the second-largest reservoir in India in terms of water storage, following the Indira Sagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh.
In July, the Punjab Vidhan Sabha had unanimously passed a resolution opposing the deployment of CISF personnel at the Bhakra-Nangal project, which had until now been guarded by the Punjab Police.
