Deputy Commissioner reviews wheat procurement, directs to expedite lifting

Reiterates Punjab Government’s commitment to procure every single grain of farmers’ produce

Jalandhar News (April 21): Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia today reviewed the ongoing wheat procurement in the district and directed officials to expedite the lifting of the crop.

Chairing a meeting with officials of the Food and Civil Supplies Department, Mandi Board and procurement agencies, the Deputy Commissioner stressed the need to ensure simultaneous lifting of wheat from grain markets after procurement. He directed procurement agencies to ensure that the stock of procured wheat is lifted from mandis within the stipulated time.

While reviewing mandi-wise lifting, he asked officials to prioritise lifting from those mandis where storage capacity is limited, so that farmers do not face any inconvenience.

Reiterating the Punjab Government’s commitment to procure every single grain of farmers’ produce, the Deputy Commissioner said that the district administration would not allow any inconvenience to farmers in the mandis. He added that foolproof arrangements have been made to ensure the smooth and hassle-free completion of the entire procurement process.

He informed that a target of procuring 5.27 lakh metric tonnes of wheat has been set for the district this season, whereas 5,14,721 metric tonnes of wheat were procured during the previous season.

Mr. Walia further said that to ensure smooth procurement operations, 79 regular and 24 temporary mandis have been set up across the district, where all necessary arrangements including drinking water, sheds, lighting and sanitation facilities have been provided for the convenience of farmers and labourers. Besides, payments for the procured crop are being credited directly into the farmers’ bank accounts within the stipulated time.

District Food and Civil Supplies Controller Narinder Singh, District Mandi Officer Arvinder Singh and officials of procurement agencies were present in the meeting.
