Amritsar: A man booked under the NDPS Act died under mysterious circumstances at a local police station on Sunday, triggering a massive protest by his family members and villagers. The deceased has been identified as Gurpreet Singh, son of Labh Singh, a resident of Qila Jiwan Singh.
Following the news of his death, the family and locals staged a dharna outside the police station and blocked the Amritsar–Jalandhar GT Road, raising slogans against the police administration and demanding justice.
SP Headquarters Tejveer Singh and DSP Gurinderpal Nagra told reporters that Gurpreet Singh, who had been detained along with another person in case number 326 under the NDPS Act, suddenly fell ill in the morning. He was rushed to the Government Hospital in Mananwala, where doctors declared him dead. Officials said the second detainee is safe.
SP Tejveer Singh added that a judicial inquiry has been ordered. “Judges are reaching the spot for the inquiry. CCTV cameras have been installed at various points in the police station, and the footage will be examined. Legal action will be taken based on the findings,” he said.
During the protest, heavy police force led by DSP Jandiala Guru Ravinder Singh and SHOs from nearby stations remained deployed. Efforts are being made to persuade the family to lift the blockade and restore traffic.
The highway remained jammed for nearly five hours, leaving devotees, wedding processions and several students on their way to examinations stranded in long queues.
