Chandigarh: The main shooter in the murder case of prominent kabaddi promoter Rana Balachoria was killed in a police encounter early Saturday morning near Rurki Kham village, close to Kharar, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Karan Defaulter. According to police, he had already been arrested and was in the custody of the CIA Staff. On Friday night, he reportedly complained of chest pain and was being taken to Civil Hospital Kharar for medical treatment.
Police said that due to dense fog, the police vehicle met with an accident and mounted a road divider. Taking advantage of the situation, Karan Default allegedly managed to flee from custody and remained absconding for nearly six to seven hours. Following his escape, a statewide alert was issued and a search operation was launched.
According to police officials, between 6 am and 7 am on Saturday, Karan Default was spotted near the encounter site. He allegedly opened fire on the police party, firing six to seven rounds. In retaliatory action, the police shot him dead.
Police suspect that he may have returned to the area to retrieve a weapon that had been hidden there earlier. Further investigation into the case is underway.
