Rain threat looms over India–Pakistan clash in Colombo

Colombo: Clear skies two days ahead of the high-voltage India–Pakistan encounter have offered little comfort, with rain forecast on match day raising concerns over possible disruption at the R. Premadasa Stadium.

According to Sri Lanka’s Meteorology Department, a low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal could bring showers to the island on Sunday evening. The T20 World Cup group-stage match between India national cricket team and Pakistan national cricket team is scheduled to begin at 7 pm local time on February 15.

Weather projections indicate a hot and humid morning in Colombo, with temperatures hovering between 30 and 31 degrees Celsius. However, there is a 50% to 70% chance of thundershowers in the afternoon, potentially affecting the toss and leading to a reduction in overs. While conditions are expected to improve slightly after 8 pm, intermittent rain through the night cannot be ruled out.

Rain is also forecast on Saturday, which could disrupt India’s practice session. The showers are being described as unseasonal, as the tournament has so far progressed without any major weather interruptions.

There is some relief for fans in the form of the stadium’s advanced drainage system. The venue is equipped with full ground covers and an efficient manual water-removal process that can make the outfield match-ready within 45 to 60 minutes after heavy rain.

Both teams have started the tournament strongly. India registered back-to-back wins against USA in Mumbai and Namibia in Delhi, while Pakistan, playing all its matches in Colombo, defeated USA and the Netherlands in its opening games.

With global viewership expected for the marquee clash, fans will be hoping the weather holds up to ensure a full contest between the two rivals.
