Park Plaza hotel demolition sparks political clash in Jalandhar, leaders detained

Jalandhar: A demolition drive by the Municipal Corporation at Hotel Park Plaza in Jalandhar on Monday triggered a political confrontation, leading to protests and detention of leaders.

The civic body used heavy machinery to demolish a portion of the hotel’s front structure, following which Congress leader Rajinder Beri reached the spot and objected to the action. The situation soon escalated into a heated argument between party workers and officials.

The demolition was briefly halted amid the uproar, but protests intensified as both BJP and Congress workers staged a protest at the site. Police later intervened, dispersed the protesters and detained BJP leaders Sheetal Angural and Sushil Rinku.

Officials said action against the hotel had been underway for the past month and notices had already been issued. While sources claimed the hotel owners had obtained a stay from court, police maintained that no such relief was granted, justifying the demolition.

Heavy police deployment remained in place to prevent any escalation, as tensions prevailed at the site during the operation.
