Lucerne, Switzerland: A special ceremony for the signing of a proposed agreement between the United States and Iran is scheduled to take place on Friday at the Burgenstock Resort near Lucerne, according to Switzerland’s Foreign Ministry.
Swiss officials said the venue was proposed by mediators from Pakistan and Qatar, a suggestion that was subsequently accepted by both the United States and Iran.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry stated that it has remained in close contact with Pakistan, Qatar, the United States and Iran regarding the planned event. The ceremony is expected to focus on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that officials from Washington and Tehran announced over the past week.
If finalised, the agreement could mark a significant development in relations between the two countries, which have remained strained for decades over a range of political, security and economic issues.
Diplomatic observers say the proposed accord may provide a framework for addressing several long-standing points of contention and could open the door to further negotiations between the two sides.
Additional details regarding the contents of the agreement and the participation of senior leaders are expected to emerge ahead of the signing ceremony.
