Jalandhar: Tension gripped Bhagwan Valmiki Chowk in Jalandhar after a market association leader was allegedly attacked with sharp-edged weapons by youths accused of theft. The incident triggered protests in the area, forcing police to deploy additional personnel to maintain law and order.
According to local residents, the controversy began when members of the public allegedly caught a young man while attempting to commit theft. Witnesses claimed that after being confronted, the suspect suddenly attacked the person who had detained him.
Police reached the spot shortly after receiving information about the incident and took the accused into custody. However, residents alleged that the suspects later managed to flee despite the presence of police personnel.
Angered by the development, traders and local residents staged a sit-in protest at the chowk, leading to traffic disruption in the area. Protesters demanded strict action against the accused and questioned the handling of the case by the police.
Demonstrators also accused the authorities of failing to take immediate and effective legal action, alleging negligence in dealing with the suspects. The protest continued for several hours as residents sought assurances of justice and accountability.
Police officials have launched an investigation into the incident and are examining the circumstances under which the accused allegedly escaped. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry, officials said.
