Chandigarh: The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has initiated action against 193 illegal constructions in New Chandigarh and adjoining areas for violations of building norms.
Authorities have issued show-cause notices to the property owners, asking them to explain the violations. Officials said that if the replies are found unsatisfactory, owners will be directed to demolish the structures themselves within a stipulated time.
Failure to comply will lead to demolition by GMADA, with the cost recovered from the owners. Legal action, including registration of FIRs, may also be initiated.
The violations have been reported from areas including Karoran, Jayanti Majri, Mirzapur, Sultanpur and Siswan, where several farmhouses are allegedly being used for commercial purposes such as marriage palaces, parties and eateries.
Officials also flagged instances of domestic LPG cylinders being used commercially during the wedding season, which is a violation of safety and regulatory norms.
Since these areas are not approved for commercial activities, GMADA is preparing to launch a wider enforcement drive to curb such violations.
