Only PM Modi, Xi and Putin can help prevent global crisis amid Iran conflict: Jeffrey Sachs

Washington: Amid escalating tensions between the US, Israel and Iran in West Asia, noted American economist Professor Jeffrey Sachs has said that only three global leaders — India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, China’s President Xi Jinping and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin — have the influence to help avert a potential global catastrophe.

In an interview with NewOrder TV, Sachs said the growing conflict must be addressed urgently by “wise leadership”, urging coordinated global intervention to prevent further escalation.

He suggested that Modi, Xi and Putin could collectively play a decisive role in restraining US actions and reducing tensions. Sachs also called for the use of multilateral platforms like BRICS, under India’s leadership, to facilitate dialogue and coordinated diplomatic efforts.

Highlighting India’s global standing, Sachs said New Delhi should not remain silent given its influence and historical role. He argued that India has the capacity to challenge “wrong decisions” and should take a proactive diplomatic stance.

Sachs further advised India to leverage its longstanding ties with countries like Iran to help mediate and de-escalate the conflict. He termed the ongoing war a “war of choice” and warned that it violates international norms while posing a serious threat to global stability and the economy.
