Chandigarh: In a major breakthrough in the sensational murder case of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, the alleged mastermind Amritpal Singh Mehro has been detained in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and is being brought back to Punjab.
Police sources said a Bathinda Police team, led by a DSP-rank officer, has taken custody of the accused from UAE authorities. He has boarded a flight and is expected to land in India after midnight on Thursday.
Mehro was detained by Sharjah Police in January during visa-related questioning, but the deportation process took time to complete.
Kanchan Kumari was murdered in June 2025 after being lured to Bathinda on the pretext of a promotional event. She was strangled to death on the night of June 9–10, and her body was recovered three days later from a car parked at Adarsh University.
Investigators said Mehro, along with his associates Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjeet Singh, planned and carried out the murder. The accused claimed that the influencer’s social media content had hurt Sikh sentiments.
