Punjab Assembly passes strict sacrilege bill unanimously, House echoes with slogans

Chandigarh: The Punjab Assembly on Monday unanimously passed the Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026, marking a significant and historic step to curb sacrilege.

As the Speaker announced the passage of the bill, the House resonated with slogans of “Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal.”

Addressing the Assembly, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said the law has been drafted with strong legal safeguards to ensure no accused can exploit loopholes. He asserted that the legislation is comprehensive and stringent enough to eliminate the need for any future sacrilege law in the state.

During the session, the Assembly also extended by six months the tenure of a select committee examining the Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scriptures Bill, 2025, to allow deeper scrutiny of its legal and technical aspects.

The bill was introduced during a special session of the Assembly held on the occasion of Khalsa Sajna Diwas. The proceedings began with recitation of Gurbani, lending a spiritual tone to the House before the debate commenced.
