New Delhi: A major aviation scare unfolded at Indira Gandhi International Airport when a Swiss International Air Lines aircraft suffered an engine failure and caught fire during takeoff.
Flight LX147, bound for Zurich, was scheduled to depart shortly after 1:00 am on Saturday night when the incident occurred.
Pilot halts takeoff amid flames
Officials said one of the aircraft’s engines failed and caught fire just as the plane was preparing for takeoff. The pilot immediately aborted the takeoff, preventing a potentially serious accident.
The aircraft involved was an Airbus A330.
Emergency evacuation carried out
Passengers were evacuated using emergency slides on the runway. At least six passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation process.
Initial observations indicated smoke emerging from the left landing gear area, prompting swift action by the crew.
Airline and authorities respond
Swiss International Air Lines confirmed the incident, stating that local teams are assisting passengers and coordinating with authorities.
The airline added that a detailed investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the malfunction, with a team expected to arrive in Delhi soon.
