New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Odisha government and the state police chief over the alleged rape of a 20-year-old college student near Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district.
According to a statement released by the commission on Monday, the victim had reportedly gone to the beach with a male friend to celebrate a festival when the accused overpowered her friend and sexually assaulted her.
The NHRC said it had taken suo motu cognisance of the incident after media reports surfaced and has sought a detailed report from the Odisha Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police within two weeks.
