Washington, DC: The US Supreme Court has curtailed the authority of federal judges to grant broad legal relief, delivering a significant ruling related to former President Donald Trump’s effort to restrict birthright citizenship.

In a 6-3 decision authored by Justice Amy Coney Barrett, the court upheld the Trump administration’s appeal to narrow the scope of three nationwide injunctions issued by federal judges in Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington state. These injunctions had blocked the implementation of Trump’s policy during ongoing litigation.

The Supreme Court directed the lower courts to reconsider the extent of their orders and ruled that Trump’s policy could take effect 30 days after the Friday ruling.

The decision marks a notable shift in judicial power regarding nationwide legal stays.
