Chandigarh: US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced a 25 percent tariff on Indian imports starting August 1, drawing criticism from Punjab Congress chief and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his past remarks calling Trump a friend.

Reacting to the development, Warring posted on X, formerly Twitter, “Dushman na kare, dost ne wo kaam kiya hai. Modi’s ‘friend’ Trump imposed 25% tax and penalty on India, put him in the dock for buying oil and weapons from Russia, and Modi ji just kept cheering by saying ‘Donald Trump is my friend’.”

He further said, “The country is suffering this pretense of friendship.”

Trump’s tariff move comes amid concerns in Washington over India’s continuing defence and energy ties with Russia.
