Washington: President Donald Trump has announced that his administration will impose steep import tariffs from October 1, targeting several key sectors including pharmaceuticals, furniture, and heavy vehicles.
Trump said that a 100 per cent tariff will be applied to branded and patented pharmaceutical products unless companies establish production facilities in the United States. He clarified that companies currently “building” plants — defined as projects where ground has been broken or construction is underway — will be exempt from the pharmaceutical tariff.
In addition, Trump declared a 50 per cent tariff on imported kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, 30 per cent on upholstered furniture, and 25 per cent on heavy trucks.
In a post on Truth Social, the former president wrote, “Starting October 1, 2025, we will impose 100% tariffs on any branded or patented pharmaceutical product, provided that no company builds its own pharmaceutical production plant in the United States. ‘IS BUILDING’ shall be defined as ‘breaking ground’ and/or ‘under construction’.”
