New Delhi: Air India has introduced a new ‘Basic Fare’ category for domestic flights, offering passengers a lower-cost travel option without complimentary meal service.
The airline said the new fare is entirely optional and has been introduced to provide greater flexibility for travellers who prefer lower ticket prices and do not require additional onboard services.
Under the new structure, passengers can continue to choose from the existing Value, Classic and Flex fare categories, which include complimentary meals and a range of additional benefits. Ticket prices increase according to the services offered under each category.
According to Air India, the Basic Fare is currently being rolled out as part of a pilot programme on select domestic routes. The airline will assess passenger feedback and overall response before deciding whether to make the fare category a permanent feature across its network.
The Basic Fare is available for economy class passengers and includes an allowance of 15 kilograms of checked baggage and 7 kilograms of cabin baggage. Travellers will also receive complimentary beverages such as tea or coffee, but meals will not be included in the fare.
The airline said the move is intended to offer customers more choice while helping address increasing operational costs. The pilot programme will help determine the long-term viability of the new fare option based on customer demand and travel preferences.
