Man killed in Faridkot over love affair, wife deported from Canada conspired with lover

Chandigarh: A man was found murdered on the rooftop of his house in Sukhnawala village of Faridkot district late Friday night, in what police say appears to be a case linked to a love affair. The deceased has been identified as Gurwinder Singh. His wife, Rupinder Kaur, has been arrested, while her alleged lover, Harkanwalpreet Singh of Balluana village in Bathinda, is currently absconding.

The incident came to light when Rupinder Kaur raised an alarm around midnight, prompting villagers to rush to the house. Gurwinder’s body was found lying on the roof, though the exact method of murder was initially unclear.

According to police, Gurwinder Singh, who belonged to an NRI family, married Rupinder Kaur in 2023. After the marriage, Rupinder travelled to Canada but was deported in 2024. During her stay abroad, she is believed to have developed a relationship with Harkanwalpreet Singh, who was also deported from Canada around the same time.

In her statement to police, Manvir Kaur, the deceased’s married sister, said her brother had repeatedly informed the family about Rupinder Kaur’s alleged relationship and had feared he might be harmed. She told the police that a day before the incident, the family had received information about Gurwinder’s death. Upon reaching the house, relatives learnt that he had allegedly been killed by Rupinder Kaur in collusion with her lover.

Police suspect the victim may have been administered poison or strangled, though the exact cause will be confirmed after the post-mortem. A search has been launched to trace Harkanwalpreet Singh, and further investigation is underway.
