MP Raghav Chadha flags concerns over safety and job insecurity of delivery workers in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha on Friday drew attention to the hardships faced by delivery personnel working for platforms such as Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit, Zepto, Ola and Uber. Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Chadha said these ‘gig workers’ are, in fact, the “unseen wheels of the Indian economy”.

Chadha said that delivery workers are expected to provide services within ten minutes or as soon as possible after an order is placed, often putting their lives at risk. “Behind the silence of these unseen wheels lies the need for employment and the insecurity surrounding it, which compels them to take such risks,” he said.

He added that e-commerce and instant-delivery companies have earned billions of rupees while bringing convenience to citizens, yet the workers who enable this transformation continue to face poor working conditions. “The condition of these workers, who make these companies billionaires, is worse than that of daily wage labourers,” Chadha said.

The MP urged the government to acknowledge the challenges faced by gig workers and take steps to improve their safety and financial security.
