SHIMLA: A doctor was suspended on Monday following an alleged assault on a patient at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
According to officials, the patient had come to the hospital for an endoscopy. After the procedure, he went to a ward to rest and reportedly fell asleep after seeing an empty bed.
When the doctor later noticed the patient outside the ward, a verbal altercation broke out which escalated into a physical scuffle. Videos circulating online show both the doctor and the patient kicking and punching each other.
Following the incident, the hospital administration suspended the doctor and constituted an internal committee to investigate the matter. The state health minister said that strict action would be taken if the doctor’s fault is proved.
After the alleged beating, the patient’s relatives staged a protest outside the hospital and demanded stringent action against the doctor. They said the patient had been advised to take rest after the endoscopy and had gone to the ward as instructed.
Hospital authorities said the inquiry committee will examine the circumstances leading to the incident and submit its report soon.
