New Delhi: Amid the escalating conflict in West Asia, Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation late Friday night with Masoud Pezeshkian and expressed concern over the rising tensions in the region.
During the call, Modi conveyed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent civilian lives and emphasised that restraint, dialogue and diplomacy remain the only path to restoring peace in the region.
This was the first direct interaction between the leaders of India and Iran since the conflict involving United States and Israel began on February 28.
The prime minister also raised the issue of the safety of around 9,000 Indian nationals currently in Iran, most of whom are medical students. He said the safety and well-being of Indians abroad remain the government’s top priority.
Efforts are underway by the Indian embassy to facilitate the safe return of students through neighbouring countries such as Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Modi also discussed the importance of ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies and trade flows, which are critical for global economic stability. Meanwhile, S Jaishankar has already held multiple discussions with his Iranian counterpart on the situation.
