Clash erupts at Surrey gurdwara over control dispute; police intervene

Toronto: A clash broke out at Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, Canada, over a dispute related to committee control, prompting police intervention.

According to reports, tensions escalated on March 30 when a group allegedly attempted to take control of the gurdwara management from an existing committee run by senior members. The situation turned volatile after banners were put up, leading to protests from members of the congregation.

Eyewitnesses said the confrontation quickly escalated into pushing and physical scuffles inside the premises. Police teams reached the spot and brought the situation under control by separating the two groups.

Authorities confirmed that the situation was stabilised following intervention, and no major injuries were reported.

The gurdwara is believed to be associated with Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a pro-Khalistan figure who was killed in 2023 in the gurdwara’s parking area. Since then, tensions over control of the management have persisted.

Disputes over committee control have surfaced earlier as well, with divisions reportedly growing within the local Sikh community over the issue.
