Chandigarh: Studying abroad is becoming increasingly difficult for Indian students as major countries tighten visa norms, with rejection rates rising sharply across destinations.
In the United States, nearly 61% of Indian students applying for F-1 visa in 2025 were rejected. This marks a steep rise from 36% in 2023 and 53% in 2024, indicating that securing a US student visa has become significantly tougher.
Experts say the trend is not solely based on merit, pointing to a “geography factor” influencing decisions. While European applicants reportedly enjoy approval rates above 90%, Indian students are facing disproportionately higher rejections, raising concerns about regional disparity in visa processing.
Australia, Canada also tighten norms
In Australia, around 40% of Indian student visa applications were rejected in early 2026. The country has placed India in a higher-risk category (EL3), requiring stricter financial proof, detailed academic records, and a strong “Genuine Student” statement.
Meanwhile, Canada has reduced study permits by 64% in 2025 and plans an additional 7% cut in 2026. The government has introduced caps to limit the number of international students, further shrinking opportunities.

However, experts advise students to stay prepared by strengthening documentation, maintaining transparency in applications, and ensuring compliance with updated visa requirements rather than being discouraged by the trend.
