New Delhi: Independent MP Pappu Yadav has stirred a major controversy with his remarks on women’s role in politics.
Speaking at a press conference in Purnia, Yadav claimed that “90% of women’s political careers begin in leaders’ rooms,” a statement that has drawn widespread criticism for being insensitive and controversial.
He also pointed out that while Indian society claims to respect women, it often fails to provide them equal opportunities in public life. According to him, political and social structures continue to limit women’s independent participation.
The remark comes amid an already heated debate over the women’s reservation bill, which recently failed to pass in Parliament. Political reactions have been mixed, with many leaders condemning the statement, while some viewed it as a reflection of deeper systemic issues.
