Sangrur: Two people were killed and another sustained critical injuries after a car rammed into a truck on the Bharatmala Highway near Bhawanigarh in Punjab’s Sangrur district on Monday, police said.

According to preliminary information, Prince Kumar, a resident of Delhi, was travelling to Katra in Jammu and Kashmir for a pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi shrine along with his two friends, Saniya Siddiqui and Mahira. Another vehicle carrying family members was reportedly following their car.

The accident took place near Phagguwala village when a truck moving ahead allegedly applied sudden brakes. The car travelling behind collided with the rear portion of the truck, resulting in a severe impact that left the vehicle badly damaged.

Family members and passersby rushed to the spot and helped rescue the occupants trapped inside the wrecked car. The injured were taken to the government hospital in Bhawanigarh.

Doctors declared Prince Kumar and Mahira dead on arrival, while Saniya Siddiqui was admitted for treatment. Her condition is reported to be critical.

Police teams reached the scene soon after receiving information about the accident and began an investigation. Officials said a case has been registered on the basis of the complaint received.

Efforts are underway to identify and trace the truck driver, who reportedly left the scene after the accident. Authorities said further action will be taken following the completion of the investigation.
