Amritsar: A historic and emotionally charged hearing at the Secretariat of Sri Akal Takht Sahib over the Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026 concluded with a major political and religious consensus on Monday.
Acting Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj directed Sikh legislators to ensure that the objections raised by Sri Akal Takht Sahib to the legislation are addressed through amendments within one month. He also ordered the immediate suspension of the implementation of the Act until the required changes are made.
As the decision was announced by the five Sikh high priests, legislators and ministers from the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal unanimously accepted the directive. The gathering echoed with slogans of “Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal”, while the legislators assured the Akal Takht that the required amendments would be brought before the Punjab Assembly within the stipulated time.
The proceedings concluded in a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. Following the hearing, the five Sikh high priests, along with Punjab ministers and MLAs present at the meeting, collectively recited Gurbani, bringing the historic deliberations to a close.
Before concluding the session, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj instructed leaders of all political parties to refrain from political blame games over the sensitive issue. He said the matter concerns the honour of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and should not be turned into a political contest.
He also urged political leaders to avoid statements in the media or on social media that could create fear, division or hostility among people, and appealed to all parties to work together to uphold the dignity and respect of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
