Mahesh Dixit appointed as new Intelligence Bureau chief

New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of 1993-batch IPS officer Mahesh Dixit of the Telangana cadre as the next Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), India’s premier internal intelligence agency.

Dixit is currently serving as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau. He will succeed Himachal Pradesh cadre IPS officer Tapan Deka, who has been heading the IB since 2022. Deka’s extended tenure is scheduled to end on June 30.

During his career, Dixit has served as the head of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Srinagar and is regarded as an expert on security and intelligence matters related to Jammu and Kashmir. He has also overseen intelligence operations in the Leh region.

Officials credit him with playing a significant role in maintaining law and order and strengthening security arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir following the Centre’s decision to revoke Article 370 in August 2019.

Given his extensive experience and expertise in national security and intelligence operations, Dixit’s appointment is being seen as significant for India’s internal security and intelligence framework.
