Toronto: A Punjabi-origin radio host in Canada has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison by the Supreme Court of British Columbia in a major drug trafficking case.
The convict, Sukhwinder Kaur Sangha (47), was arrested with methamphetamine worth around ₹83 crore. Despite denying involvement in court, investigators presented mobile text messages that revealed she was an active and willing participant in the trafficking operation and a trusted member of the network.
Originally linked to Nakodar in Jalandhar, Sangha was born in Prince George, Canada, and had built a strong presence in Punjabi radio over the past decade. She worked as a freelance radio and TV host and was a well-known figure in the Punjabi community, often hosting prominent guests including politicians and public figures.
The arrest dates back to October 2021, when Sangha was entering Canada from the US in a rental car with Florida number plates. At a border checkpoint in Surrey, officials from the Canada Border Services Agency referred her for secondary inspection.
Instead of cooperating, she fled the checkpoint at high speed, triggering a police chase. She was eventually apprehended on 16 Avenue in Surrey.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of four duffel bags containing 108 kilograms of methamphetamine, shocking investigators due to the scale of the seizure.
