Congress accuses CEC of acting like BJP spokesperson, demands SC affidavit on voter list

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday hit back at Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, saying the Election Commission should first file an affidavit in the Supreme Court declaring its electoral roll clean, after which the party will also submit an affidavit highlighting irregularities in the list.

The opposition alleged that Kumar appeared like a “BJP spokesperson” during his press conference in New Delhi. Earlier, the CEC had asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to file a signed affidavit within seven days to substantiate his allegations of vote theft, failing which the claims would be treated as baseless.

“He (Gyanesh Kumar) threatened us to give an affidavit. He may be scared of threats, but we are not. They don’t trust their own data,” Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar said.

He further alleged that the BJP wanted to “steal votes” and “steal the Constitution”. Kumar added that despite repeated requests, the EC refused to provide the voter list in a machine-readable format.

“The EC kept saying there is no problem, but now they admit issues exist. First give an affidavit in the Supreme Court that your electoral roll is clean, then we will give an affidavit pointing out irregularities,” he said.
