New Delhi: The opposition alliance, India, on Tuesday announced former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy as its candidate for the upcoming vice-presidential election. Reddy will contest against the ruling NDA nominee and Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan in the election scheduled for September 9.
Reddy, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, was finalised as the opposition’s choice at a meeting held at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence on Tuesday morning. Announcing his name, Kharge said the former judge has always upheld constitutional values.
All opposition MPs are set to gather at the Central Hall of the old Parliament House at 1 pm on Wednesday to formally present Reddy as their nominee.
TMC leader Derek O’Brien confirmed that the Aam Aadmi Party has also agreed to the decision. Reddy’s nomination papers will be filed on August 21.
