    Chandigarh constable assaults family in Nayagaon, threatens victims

    Chandigarh: A Chandigarh Police constable allegedly entered a house in Nayagaon and assaulted a family, police said on Saturday. The incident occurred after an altercation broke out when a woman from the house tried to stop him.

    According to the family, the constable, who was wearing a police uniform, threatened them, claiming that even if identified as a member of the Chandigarh Police, no one could take action against him. He allegedly warned the family to visit Chandigarh if they wanted to witness his power.

    The victim’s family filed a complaint with the Mohali police, demanding strict action and registration of an FIR against the accused. They expressed concern for their safety and said a strong response was necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.

    Monika Sharma, a member of the victim’s family, said she was on duty at the New OPD of PGI Chandigarh when she received a distress call from her son. “My frightened child told me that a man in police uniform had entered our house, assaulted their father, and threatened the family,” Sharma said.

    She added that the confrontation reportedly started after the children spoke about playing in the street.

    Ahmedabad: In a major anti-smuggling operation, the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the Indian Coast Guard seized 300 kg of suspected methamphetamine, valued at around Rs 1,800 crore, from the Arabian Sea near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

    According to officials, the operation was carried out during the night of April 12 and 13 based on specific intelligence inputs. A Coast Guard vessel detected a suspicious boat near the IMBL. Upon noticing the approaching ship, the smugglers threw the narcotics overboard and fled toward international waters, abandoning their boat.

    Despite the challenging night conditions, the Coast Guard successfully traced and recovered the dumped drugs. The smugglers managed to cross the international border and evade arrest.

    The seized substance is suspected to be methamphetamine and will undergo further examination by the ATS. Officials highlighted that this joint action marks the 13th successful operation by the Gujarat ATS and Indian Coast Guard in recent years, underscoring the effectiveness of coordinated efforts in combating drug trafficking along India’s maritime borders.

    Mehul Choksi arrested in Belgium, India begins extradition process

    New Delhi: Fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi, wanted in the Punjab National Bank loan fraud case, has been arrested in Belgium.

    According to official sources, he was taken into custody on April 12 following an extradition request by Indian investigative agencies and is currently lodged in a Belgian jail.

    Choksi was arrested based on two arrest warrants issued by a Mumbai court, dated May 23, 2018, and June 15, 2021. Indian authorities have initiated the formal process to extradite him from Belgium.

    Following his arrest, Choksi has applied for bail, citing poor health. He told the court that he had travelled to Belgium for medical treatment and was residing in Antwerp with his wife.

    Punjab Police arrest two linked to Germany-based terror module, foil IED attack plan

    Ferozepur: The Counter Intelligence team of Punjab Police has arrested two operatives of a Germany-based terror module led by Gurpreet Singh alias Goldy Dhillon. The arrests led to the recovery of a 2.8 kg improvised explosive device (IED), which included 1.6 kg of RDX and a remote control.

    The accused, identified as Jagga Singh and Manjinder Singh, are currently on police remand. According to Punjab Director General of Police (DGP), preliminary investigations have revealed their links to jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. The terror module is reportedly operated by Goldy Dhillon, a close associate of Goldy Brar and Bishnoi.

    In a tweet, the DGP described the arrests as a major breakthrough and said the operation foiled an attempt by Pakistan’s ISI to disrupt peace and harmony in Punjab. The IED was intended for a targeted terror attack, the DGP added.

    An FIR has been registered under the Explosive Substances Act at the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) police station in Mohali. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for information leading to the arrest of Goldy Dhillon.

    Punjab Police said they remain committed to dismantling transnational terror and organized crime networks backed by Pakistan’s ISI.

    Jalandhar News: In yet another major breakthrough amidst the ongoing drive to make Punjab a safe and secure state as per directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Jalandhar Commissionerate Police, with the support of Central Agencies and Delhi Police, has successfully arrested Uttar Pradesh (UP)-based Saidul Ameen— the prime accused involved in the grenade attack at BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia’s residence, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Saturday.

    As per the information, an explosion occurred at the residence of Senior BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia located in Central Town Jalandhar on the intervening night of April 7. Preliminary investigations had revealed a larger conspiracy orchestrated by Pakistan’s ISI to disrupt communal harmony in Punjab.

    The development came close on the heels of the arrest of two local associates identified as Satish alias Kaka alias Lucky of Bhargo Camp in Jalandhar and Harry of Garha Road in Jalandhar, who provided logistical support to accused Saidul Ameen. The plot was masterminded by Zeeshan Akhtar, a close associate of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and Pakistan-based ISI-sponsored gangster Shahzad Bhatti, while, role of Pakistan-based Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) is also being probed.

    DGP Gaurav Yadav accompanied by Commissioner of Police (CP) Jalandhar Dhanpreet Kaur, while addressing a press conference in Jalandhar, said that accused Saidul Ameen, a resident of Amroha in UP, was apprehended from Delhi after an intensive multi-state manhunt. “This arrest is a testament to the seamless coordination between Punjab Police, Central Agencies, and Delhi Police in dismantling terror networks,” he said.

    The DGP said that the ongoing probe has also revealed the financial link to the executors of the grenade attack under which role of Haryana-based accused identified as Abhijot, who was arrested by the Haryana Police on Friday after exchange of fire in Kurukshetra, has also come under the light. Jalandhar Commissionerate Police will bring him on production warrant for further investigations, he added.

    DGP Gaurav Yadav said that further investigations are ongoing to uncover handlers, financial backers, and potential foreign connections linked to the attack.

    A case FIR no. 27 dated 8/4/2025 has already been registered under sections 109, 324(3) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act has been registered at Police Station Division number 3 in Jalandhar.

    New Delhi: The main accused in the grenade blast case at BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia’s residence in Jalandhar has been arrested from Delhi, Punjab Police officials said.

    The accused, Saidul Amin, a resident of Amroha in Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended in a joint operation by Jalandhar Commissionerate Police, central agencies, and Delhi Police.

    “In a major breakthrough in the Jalandhar grenade attack case, Jalandhar Commissionerate Police, in collaboration with central agencies and Delhi Police, has successfully arrested Saidul Amin from Delhi,” Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said.

    Tarn Taran: A man was shot dead on Sunday in a firing incident linked to a land dispute in Patti town of Tarn Taran district, police said. The deceased has been identified as Barinderbir Singh, a resident of Kot Dhana village in Barnala district.

    According to police, Barinderbir Singh was related to Ishtpartap Singh, a resident of Patti whose grandfather had allegedly transferred ownership rights of a 16-acre plot to Navtej Singh and Jagbir Singh of Bishamberpur Jandiala years ago.

    However, following the grandfather’s death, Ishtpartap Singh reportedly refused to formalise the transfer, leading to a legal dispute over the land.

    Barinderbir Singh had reportedly built a temporary room on the disputed land and was present there with some companions when two unidentified men arrived in a Fortuner SUV and opened fire.

    Barinderbir was struck by two bullets and died on the spot, while his companions managed to escape.

    The assailants fled the scene after the attack. Police from City Patti police station arrived shortly after and shifted the body to the mortuary at Civil Hospital Patti.

    Station House Officer (SHO) Harpreet Singh said the statements of the deceased’s family members are being recorded and further action will be taken based on their account.

    11 more arrested in sub-inspector Charanjit Singh murder case, police continue crackdown

    Chandigarh: The local police have arrested 11 more individuals in connection with the murder of Sub-Inspector Charanjit Singh, who was killed while trying to resolve a dispute between two groups at Kot Mohammad Khan village on Wednesday night.

    With this, the total number of arrests in the case has reached 18, including four women. All the accused were produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMIC) Rajdeep Singh Mann at Khadoor Sahib on Friday. The court sent them to four-day police remand.

    The police said they have launched continuous raids to apprehend the remaining suspects. Ferozepur Range DIG Harmanbir Singh Gill said a case has been registered against around 70 people in connection with the incident.

    The arrested accused have been identified as Amritpal Kaur, Rajwant Kaur, Veer Kaur, Manjit Kaur, Vasan Singh, Manjinder Singh, Amritpal Singh, Mahavir Singh, Akashdeep Singh, Hardev Singh, Baldev Singh, Sarpanch Kuldeep Singh, Arshdeep Singh, Harpal Singh — all residents of Kot Mohammad Khan — Jorawar Singh of Chander Colony in Tarn Taran, Palwinder Singh of Pidi village, Rajandeep Singh Billu of Chak Mehar village, and Gursewak Singh.

    Sub-Inspector Charanjit Singh was posted as Additional SHO at Goindwal Sahib police station.

    His postmortem is scheduled for Saturday at the district hospital in Tarn Taran, to be conducted by a panel of three doctors. The last rites will take place in Bhikhiwind the same day.

    Singh’s son, who returned from Canada, will attend the cremation. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav is also expected to be present. DIG Gill said efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the remaining accused involved in the case.

    New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has told a Delhi court that Tahawwur Rana, a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, had also planned to target several other Indian cities. The revelation was made before Special Judge Chandra Jit Singh, who sent Rana to 18-day NIA custody.

    In his order, the judge directed the agency to conduct a medical examination of Rana every 24 hours. Rana has also been allowed to meet his lawyer every alternate day, but only at an audible distance and in the presence of NIA officials. Additionally, he has been permitted to use only a soft-tipped pen.

    NIA officials informed the court that they suspect Rana was involved in a broader conspiracy to replicate the 2008 Mumbai-style attacks in other cities.

    The agency may take Rana to key locations to gather crucial evidence and retrace the events from 17 years ago, officials added.

    New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi on Friday morning for a day-long visit and took detailed information about a gang rape case that has shocked the city.

    He directed officials to take strict action against the culprits and to ensure such incidents do not occur in the future.

    According to a statement issued by the Uttar Pradesh government, Modi was briefed on the case soon after landing at the Varanasi airport by the Commissioner of Police and the District Magistrate.

    “He directed to take the strictest possible action against the culprits and take appropriate steps to prevent such incidents in future,” the statement said.

    The case involves the alleged rape of a 19-year-old girl by 23 men over a period of six days. Police said the accused drugged the victim and took her to different hotels where she was raped. As of Monday, six people had been arrested in connection with the case.
