Ankita Bhandari murder case: Pulkit Arya, two others sentenced to life imprisonment

New Delhi: A special court in Kotdwar on Friday sentenced BJP leader Pulkit Arya, son of former Uttarakhand minister Vinod Arya, to life imprisonment in the Ankita Bhandari murder case.

Along with Pulkit, his two employees—Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta—were also convicted and handed life terms. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each of the three convicts.

The verdict comes nearly two years and eight months after the crime, which had sparked widespread outrage across the country.

Ankita Bhandari, 19, worked as a receptionist at a resort owned by Pulkit Arya in Rishikesh. She went missing on September 18, 2022. Her body was recovered six days later from the Chilla canal on September 24.

According to the prosecution, Ankita was allegedly pressured to offer “special services” to VIP guests at the resort and was killed when she resisted. The case had drawn sharp criticism of the political and administrative system in Uttarakhand, with calls for swift justice.

Ahead of the verdict, Ankita’s father Virendra Singh Bhandari had appealed for the death penalty for the accused. “The criminals who killed my innocent daughter should be hanged,” he said.

The court, however, awarded life imprisonment to all three convicts.

Sidhu Moosewala remembered on third death anniversary; family holds prayer ceremony in Mansa

Mansa: The third death anniversary of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala was observed on Wednesday with a prayer ceremony held at his native village Musa in Punjab’s Mansa district. The singer’s family performed the bhog of Shri Sehaj Path in his memory.

Moosewala, 28, was shot dead on May 29, 2022, a day after the Punjab government curtailed his security. He was travelling in a private vehicle without his bulletproof car and accompanied by only two bodyguards instead of four. According to doctors, he was shot 19 times and succumbed to his injuries within 15 minutes.

Both Bishnoi and Brar have claimed in media interviews that Moosewala’s manager, Shagunpreet, was involved in Midukhera’s murder.

Sidhu Moosewala rose to global fame with hits like So High, 295, Bambiha Bole, and Issa Jatt. His debut album PBX1 was featured on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart. Top officials including DGP sent on leave as CBI files FIR in Vimal Negi death case

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh’s top bureaucrat, police chief, and Shimla police chief were sent on leave on Tuesday after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered an FIR into the death of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) engineer Vimal Negi. The development followed a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu with senior officials in the evening.

Those sent on leave include Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Onkar Sharma, Director General of Police Atul Verma, and Shimla Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi. Sources said that show cause notices are also likely to be issued to them.

The case took a dramatic turn after SP Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi recently held a press conference, alleging that DGP Verma had submitted a misleading status report in the Vimal Negi death case.

Gandhi also raised concerns over irregularities in the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe and claimed attempts were made to obstruct investigations in multiple related cases.

In response, DGP Verma reportedly wrote to ACS (Home), recommending Gandhi’s suspension. The matter further escalated after Verma submitted his fact-finding report directly to the ACS (Home), bypassing the Advocate General’s office, which drew criticism from the Chief Minister.

Earlier, CM Sukhu had said that indiscipline by officials would not be tolerated. The growing rift between the top police officers and the controversies surrounding the investigation prompted the state government to act swiftly after the CBI stepped in.

Amritsar: A 43-year-old woman from Nagpur, Sunita Jangde, who illegally crossed the Line of Control (LoC) after allegedly falling in love with a Pakistani priest, has been handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) by Pakistani Rangers at the Attari border in Amritsar.

According to officials, Sunita had gone missing on May 14 while on a holiday in Ladakh with her 14-year-old son. She reportedly left her son at the hotel and crossed into Pakistan from Hunderman village in Kargil, a border village located just a few kilometres from the LoC.
