Three-day standoff at Rudraprayag gurdwara ends peacefully after talks with Sikh delegation

Rudraprayag: The three-day-long standoff at Nagarasu Gurdwara Sahib in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district ended peacefully on Tuesday after negotiations between the district administration and a Sikh delegation from Punjab.

Rudraprayag District Magistrate Vishal Mishra said the Nihang Singh group vacated the gurdwara premises following successful talks and cooperation from Sikh representatives who had travelled from Punjab to help resolve the issue.

The dispute had its roots in an altercation that took place on June 16 in Karnaprayag town of Chamoli district. The clash reportedly erupted over a parking issue and left several local residents injured. Following the incident, police arrested four Nihang Sikhs.

Protesting against the arrests, a group of Nihang Singhs from Mohali had camped inside Nagarasu Gurdwara Sahib and demanded the release of their associates.

In view of the tense situation, authorities deployed a large contingent of police and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel in the area. Surveillance was also carried out through drones to monitor developments around the gurdwara complex.

The district administration and the gurdwara management committee remained engaged in continuous dialogue with the protesters. The deadlock was eventually resolved after intervention by Sikh leaders and members of a delegation that arrived from Punjab.

Following the agreement, the Nihang Singhs vacated the gurdwara premises peacefully, bringing the standoff to an end without any further escalation.

The administration has appealed to residents and devotees to maintain peace and avoid spreading rumours, while assuring that law and order in the region remains under control.
