Chandigarh: Trouble has increased for senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who was arrested in Punjab in a drug-related disproportionate assets case. Vigilance teams are conducting simultaneous raids in Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Chandigarh after six people recorded statements against Majithia, officials said.
A team has also taken Majithia to his native area, Amritsar’s Majitha, and is expected to reach there by 12:30 pm. Meanwhile, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) is preparing to interrogate Majithia in connection with the case and has contacted the vigilance team, claiming the matter may fall under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Other agencies are also monitoring the developments closely.
Amid the ongoing investigation, a post was shared on Majithia’s social media account X, where his lawyer Dharamvir Singh Sobti challenged the authorities, stating, “My open challenge to the DGP Punjab, Vigilance Chief, and Punjab AG is to add even a single small section under the NDPS.”
The post included a video from the time of Majithia’s arrest and another clip where Sobti is seen responding to a journalist’s question on the government’s stance that the case is part of a ‘war against drugs.’ Sobti termed the government’s position as propaganda and a “media trial,” adding, “If you want a media trial, we agree.”
The case continues to draw attention in Punjab as multiple agencies expand their probe into the allegations against the Akali leader.
