SC raps Rahul Gandhi over remarks on Army, questions ‘how do you know China occupied 2,000 sq km’

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his alleged derogatory remarks against the Indian Army during his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, stating that “if you are a true Indian, you don’t say such things.”

A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih, while issuing notices to the Uttar Pradesh government and the complainant, stayed the proceedings pending against Gandhi in a Lucknow court.

“You are the Leader of the Opposition. You can raise your concerns in Parliament. Why did you say this on social media? How do you know 2,000 square kilometres have been occupied by China?” the bench asked, referring to Gandhi’s past remarks on the India-China border issue.

The case against Gandhi was filed by Uday Shankar Srivastava, who alleged that during his visit to Uttar Pradesh in December 2022, Gandhi made several offensive statements about the Army in the context of the ongoing border tensions with China. The Allahabad High Court had earlier dismissed Gandhi’s plea on May 29.

In his petition, Gandhi argued that the summons and the complaint were legally flawed and sought relief from the top court.
