Tamil Nadu stampede: Vijay’s stay in campaign vehicle led to crowd surge, says police

Velusamypuram: At least 41 people were killed and around 60 injured in a stampede in Velusamypuram, Tamil Nadu, during an election campaign, police said.

Authorities said that actor and political leader Vijay Velusamy’s prolonged stay inside his campaign vehicle drew massive crowds, triggering the stampede.

An FIR has been filed against three key officials of the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), while no case has been registered against Vijay. A TVK source, however, claimed that the police have arrested the actor.

Police described the incident as a sudden surge of people around the vehicle, which led to chaos and multiple casualties.
