New Delhi: A private member’s bill proposing a clear legal framework for the regulation of deepfakes was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Friday. The Regulation of Deepfake Bill, moved by Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, aims to safeguard citizens by mandating prior consent of individuals depicted in deepfake content.
Shinde said the increasing misuse of deepfakes for harassment, fraud and misinformation has created an urgent need for regulatory safeguards. The bill outlines penal provisions for individuals who create or circulate deepfake material with mala fide intent.
He noted that with rapid advances in artificial intelligence and deep learning, deepfake technology has become a powerful tool for media manipulation.
While acknowledging its potential in education, entertainment and creative sectors, Shinde warned that misuse poses serious risks to personal privacy, national security and public trust.
