Blast during New Year celebrations at Swiss ski resort, at least 10 dead

Switzerland: At least 10 people were killed and another 10 injured after an explosion rocked an alpine ski resort in Crans-Montana city of Switzerland during New Year celebrations on Thursday, Sky News reported.

According to police, the blast occurred at around 1:30 am local time at the Constellation Bar where New Year’s Eve celebrations were underway. More than 100 people were reportedly present inside the bar at the time of the explosion.

Police and emergency services rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, with the condition of some said to be critical. Authorities have sealed the blast site and surrounding areas as a precaution, while the entire zone has been declared a no-fly area.

Swiss news outlet Blick reported that the explosion and the subsequent fire may have been caused by fireworks used during a concert at the venue, though officials have not confirmed the cause so far.

Police, fire brigade and ambulance teams remain deployed at the site as investigations continue to determine the exact reason behind the explosion.
