Doctors’ body objects to FIR in Varinder Ghuman death case, calls action ‘demoralising’

Chandigarh: The Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association (PHANA), Punjab, has raised concerns over the Amritsar Police registering an FIR against four senior doctors of a private hospital in connection with the death of bodybuilder and actor Varinder Singh Ghuman.

Divyanshu Gupta, honorary secretary of PHANA, said the association was disturbed by the police action, terming it “ethically inappropriate and demoralising for the medical fraternity” if taken without a proper understanding of medical complexities.

He emphasised that no doctor intentionally harms a patient and that all medical procedures, whether major surgeries or routine treatments, carry inherent risks. These include rare but serious complications such as anaphylactic shock, which can occur despite standard care.

The FIR was registered over alleged medical negligence, sparking concern among healthcare professionals who fear it may impact clinical decision-making and patient care.

PHANA has urged authorities to adopt a balanced approach and ensure that medical experts are consulted before initiating legal action in such sensitive cases.
