Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has ordered a special girdawari to assess crop damage following unseasonal rain, strong winds and hailstorms over the past week that have severely impacted the wheat crop.
The Chief Minister said the state government will compensate farmers for their losses after the assessment is completed.
The damage has been reported across several regions, particularly in the Malwa belt, where heavy rain and hailstorm on March 30–31 caused widespread losses. Similar impact has also been observed in Majha and Doaba regions.
According to the agriculture department, more than one lakh acres of wheat crop have been affected across Punjab. Officials said the change in weather is also likely to delay the harvesting process.
The worst-hit districts include Muktsar, Fazilka, Bathinda, Amritsar and Tarn Taran. Experts warn that the damage could affect overall yield and create challenges for farmers during procurement in mandis.
Authorities added that the situation remains concerning as farmers continue to face weather-related risks.
