Jalandhar: A dramatic incident unfolded in Jalandhar on Wednesday after a young man was allegedly tied to an electricity pole and beaten by his girlfriend’s family, only for the couple to later get married outside a police station following intervention by community leaders.
The incident took place in the Basti Nau area after the girl had reportedly been missing from home for three days. Her family suspected she was with her boyfriend and allegedly called the young man to the locality on the pretext of arranging their marriage.
As soon as he arrived, family members and some locals allegedly caught him, tied him to a pole and assaulted him.
Couple tells police they were together willingly
Following the assault, the young man and his family reached Division Number 5 Police Station and informed police about the incident. During questioning, both the man and the woman stated that they were adults, had been in a relationship for nearly a year and had gone together willingly.
The matter later reached Shiv Sena Samajwadi Punjab president Narinder Thapar, who intervened on behalf of the girl’s family.
After speaking privately with the woman and counselling both families, Thapar reportedly convinced them to accept the relationship, citing the couple’s consent and legal rights as adults.
Marriage solemnised outside police station
After lengthy discussions, both families agreed to the marriage. The couple was then married at a temple outside the police station itself. The girl’s mother and aunt also accepted the marriage and blessed the newlywed couple.
Police officials said both sides later submitted written statements confirming that they did not wish to pursue any legal action.
Additional SHO Jasvir Singh said police initially received information about a fight and assault in Basti Nau, but later found the dispute was linked to a love affair.
The young man is originally from Gonda and works in a factory while living with his family in Jalandhar’s Focal Point area. Police said the girl’s mother had opposed the relationship from the beginning.
